TYPES OF DENTURES
FULL DENTURES
Full dentures replace all the teeth in the upper, lower, or both jaws. They rest directly on your gums and require about five appointments for proper fitting. Impressions of your mouth are taken, and the color, size, and shape of the teeth are chosen to match your natural appearance. If possible, healthy remaining teeth are preserved to support the dentures, known as over-dentures, which help maintain bone and stabilize the dentures.
PARTIAL DENTURES
Partial dentures replace only the missing teeth and can be either removable or fixed. Removable partial dentures attach to existing teeth with a metal framework and plastic teeth. Fixed partial dentures, or bridges, are cemented in place and resemble natural teeth, using attachments to fit over nearby natural teeth.
HOW DO DENTURES WORK?
After tooth extraction, it takes about four weeks for your mouth to heal before starting the denture process. An immediate denture may be provided temporarily. During your first appointment, bring a picture of your smiling face to help choose the size and shape of your dentures. Impressions of your mouth are taken and sent to a dental lab along with the photo to create natural-looking dentures.
Once your dentures are made, you’ll have a trial fit to ensure comfort and functionality. Adjustments will be made as needed. Wearing dentures requires an adjustment period as you get used to speaking and eating with them.
