Frequently Asked Questions
Dental Restorations
Full dental restorations are self-named because they replace the entire upper, lower, or both sets of teeth. The full restorations are permanently affixed to dental posts already implanted in the mouth. While the look and feel is natural tooth-like, there is a very small open area left between the restoration and the gum line. It is very important that the patient thoroughly brush and floss every day to avoid the accumulation of any bacteria that could encourage gingivitis or bone loss. When good at-home dental care is combined with regular dental examinations and cleanings, the restorations can last a lifetime.
Prosthetics
Dental prosthetics are the custom made, tooth-like coverings that are attached over the tooth implants. They are made from several forms of strong, durable materials intended to last for many years. The placement of the prosthetics completes the dental tooth implant procedure. Unless the patient is scheduled to receive a partial, removable denture that is supported by adjacent teeth, the prosthetics will be permanently affixed over the previously implanted dental posts. There are three major forms of dental prosthetics. One permanent prosthetic is a dental crown. Another permanent prosthetic is a dental bridge attached to adjoining teeth to fill the empty space left by lost teeth. The third prosthetic is either a permanently affixed full denture restoration or a removable, partial denture.
Supported Dentures
Supported dental restorations are also known as dental bridges. This means that the prosthetics are placed over dental implants and attached to adjoining, healthy teeth. Supported restorations are strong, durable, and permanent. However, just as patients are encouraged to avoid chewing on hard foods or ice with their natural teeth, this advice is also given in regard to supported restorations which can become loose and need to be re-attached. With a dedicated daily dental routine of brushing and flossing, as well as regularly scheduled dental examinations and cleanings, supported dental restorations will last for many years.
The Procedure
There are several phases related to a dental tooth implant. Before any posts are implanted, the dentist will select the color shade to match the other teeth in the patient’s mouth, and he will make an impression of the patient’s mouth to send to a dental lab for the creation of the dental prosthetics. During the first phase, the dentist will implant dental posts into the jaw line, below the gum line. The second phase involves the healing time when new bone grows around and supports the post. The patient will wear a temporary prosthetic during the healing phase. The final phase is the when the posts are strong enough to receive and support the permanent prosthetics, whether that is individual crowns, full dentures, or supported denture bridge work.
How Dental Implants Work
Many patients realize that dental implants are the closest thing they can get to having natural teeth after carefully evaluating artificial tooth replacement options. Dental implants offer the look and functionality of natural teeth and they have impressively high success rates. Clinical research has shown that if you are in overall good health, there is no better option for replacing missing teeth. Other tooth replacement options require far more maintenance and are not as long lasting as they usually need to be replaced every 8-10 years. On the other hand, dental implants have the potential to last a lifetime. A dental implant procedure is real surgery, and it requires multiple visits, considerable time, and a monetary investment.
